Mainlines
The 'Mainlines' network covers the frequent services connecting the majority of people across Leicester to the City Centre.
Each 'Mainline' is a group of one or more routes serving a common area of Leicester. Many are currently served by more than one operator, with no current timetable integration or unified promotion or bus branding.
The majority of investment will be targeted at these routes, providing:
electric buses
bus priority
digital ticketing
real time information displays
new shelters
In addition, the partnership came together to make key changes to help make this network easier and better for all:
joint operation to give regular timetables
joint timetable information at all stops
removing duplicate route numbering
colour-coded mapping at all bus shelters and bus stations
a limited number of timetable changes each year (up to 4) to provide a more consistent service
all buses will have
Euro VI exhaust emission standards or better
CCTV installed for safety and security
Automatic Vehicle Location equipment
Contactless ticketing payment using seamless 'tap on/tap off' technology
'Leicester Buses' network branding externally and internally
We are also seeking additional funding to:
improve frequencies so that each Mainline has a minimum frequency standard:
every 15 mins daytime Monday - Saturday
every 30 mins in the evening and Sundays.
Every 10 mins daytime Monday-Saturday on 15 Mainlines also serving key areas outside the City Centre.
Provide attractive branding for each bus to allow for easy identification and make it appealing to new users.
Greenlines
The Greenlines network consists of five cross-city and orbital routes. These are aimed at wider area travel than the Mainlines network, including park and ride.
It radically transforms these existing services:
Park and Ride services : Enderby, Meynells Gorse and Birstall P&R to the City Centre
Hospital Hopper : cross-city service linking all three hospital to the City Centre
Outer Orbital (Circleline) 40 : a complete 30-mile outer loop of Leicester
These will be expanded, joined up and radically developed in discrete stages through a five-year package of capital and revenue investment.
Like the Mainlines, they will each require individual investment projects over the next 3 years focussing on:
increased frequency
electric buses
bus priority
digital ticketing
real time information displays
new shelters
The aim is for all Greenlines to have a 15-minute daytime frequency or better and be operated with 40 electric buses by 2025.
Currently, we have funding for:
a brand new free City Centre bus service by April 2023.
24 electric buses by 2024
digital ‘best fare’ ticketing
significant bus priority on Birstall P&R service
We are currently seeking funding for
Outer Orbital service to be increase to every 15 minutes
Significant bus priority on the Outer Orbital service
A new eastern Park and Ride service
16 additional electric buses
New City Centre Greenline
This will give easier connection between different parts of the City Centre and its transport interchanges – the bus stations, railway station and main on-street bus departure points.
This will provide easy links to the universities, hospital, college, shopping centres, sporting venues and cultural quarter for those unable to readily make this link by foot.
The route chosen will enable as many of these links to be made with a reliable ten-minute frequency, using a compact, accessible electric bus.
This is likely to also include operation within some pedestrianised areas such as High St, in order to increase accessibility. A possible option that fulfils these aims is shown in this diagram.
Flexi Lines
A small demand responsive network of four accessible electric buses will be introduced, aimed:
at areas of the city beyond 400m walking distance of the Mainlines or Greenlines networks
those unable to easily use mainstream public transport for mobility reasons
These will be fully integrated and promoted under the Leicester Buses brand, with the same ticketing options available as the rest of the network.
